In Matthew's Gospel, the author is not shy about who Jesus is born to be: the long expected king. The problem is, at the time that Christ was born, there was a whole crowd of others looking to claim the same title. Therefore, the declaration of the coming of a newborn king was not something to be taken lightly, but a dangerous and subversive statement.
