Sometimes the past looks glorious from the present. This is especially the case when the present isn’t so great. We see this in the lives of the people of Israel after being freed from their captivity in Egypt. They live in inhospitable conditions, totally and completely dependent on daily food provisions, drinking water from the rock, with an eye on an unknown place and an unknown future. Who wouldn’t look back and want to go there, no matter how bad that may have been. But what happens when you can’t go back?

Jesus tells his disciples that the Temple system, the center of Jewish Religious life, will come to an end. Like all things made by human hands it will not last forever; there will be an ending. This is a truth woven into the fabric of life. But as we will learn together, endings are what gives birth to new life, to new beginnings.

As Jesus finishes His 'Sermon on the Plain', he concludes by calling to attention not so much what we believe, but how we live. In a world where many of us have placed such emphasis on faith vs. works, Jesus asks us to examine if how we live might actually be the greatest indication of what we truly believe.

This week we consider what Jesus has to say about Judgment in Luke 6. Often, we consider “blind guides” and those who judge with the “plank in their own eye” lousy religious types. But what if there is more here? What if this passage is not about bashing those who judge or refuse to forgive or remove their plank from their eye? What if, instead, this is an invitation for us to become those who are generous in the way we see others, because we have learned to be honest about how we see ourselves? What if by removing the planks we are able to compassionately and generously “see” others have sight and live free and generous lives?

This week, as we read in Luke about the words Jesus uses as he calls those who would follow Him, he paints a picture of blessing for those on the margins, and a warning to those living in comfort. This leaves us to wonder, what about those of us who land somewhere in the middle?

In Luke chapter 6, we find a group of Pharisees following Jesus and his disciples and angrily accusing them of not keeping Sabbath. But what if Sabbath was about more than militant rest? What if there's an invitation, not into greater rule keeping, but into deep delight?
