This week, we read in Matthew about what we commonly refer to as the story of the Magi, in which wise men, or kings, from the east see a star appear, and follow it to Bethlehem so that they might worship a newborn king. Their interaction with Herod in Jerusalem brings up the question, are we those more interested in questions and worship, or being right? And how might our worship leave us different than when we came?

In our current context dreams are often seen as “weird” or “odd” or simply a complex web of thoughts our brains sort through at the end of the day - somehow deciding what to keep and what to delete. But the stories at the beginning of Matthew’s Gospel suggest a very different way of viewing and understanding dreams; to the extent that they are central the Christmas story. Somehow, this dream suggests that we may need to pay attention to more than what is in the tangible world.

November 11, 2022: A Tale of Two Crowds - Michael Hidalgo

Sunday Nov 13, 2022
This week we look at Luke 7:11-17 and engage how many of us find ourselves experiencing the death of something - a dream, a hope, a job, a relationship, a marriage a future. How often are we in the large crowd mourning? What would it be like to encounter another crowd with Jesus - one humming with life? It can feel cheap to promise life in the midst of death, but we must not forget even in the darkest moments there is something of a promise of resurrection.

Sometimes the past looks glorious from the present. This is especially the case when the present isn’t so great. We see this in the lives of the people of Israel after being freed from their captivity in Egypt. They live in inhospitable conditions, totally and completely dependent on daily food provisions, drinking water from the rock, with an eye on an unknown place and an unknown future. Who wouldn’t look back and want to go there, no matter how bad that may have been. But what happens when you can’t go back?

Jesus tells his disciples that the Temple system, the center of Jewish Religious life, will come to an end. Like all things made by human hands it will not last forever; there will be an ending. This is a truth woven into the fabric of life. But as we will learn together, endings are what gives birth to new life, to new beginnings.

As Jesus finishes His 'Sermon on the Plain', he concludes by calling to attention not so much what we believe, but how we live. In a world where many of us have placed such emphasis on faith vs. works, Jesus asks us to examine if how we live might actually be the greatest indication of what we truly believe.
